1Now, brothers and sisters, let's talk about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Let's talk about how we will be gathered together to him. We ask you 2not to get upset or scared too easily. Someone may say the Day of the Lord has already come. They may claim it through a spirit, or a message, or a letter that seems to come from us. 3Don't let anyone fool you in any way. That day will not come until the great turning away from God happens first. And the man of lawlessness must be shown first. He is the son of destruction. 4He will fight against every so-called god and every thing people worship. He will lift himself up above all of them. So he will sit down in God's temple and claim that he is God. 5Don't you remember? I told you these things while I was still with you. 6And you know what is holding him back right now. It holds him back so that he will be shown at the right time. 7For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work. But the one who holds it back now will keep doing so until he is taken out of the way. 8Then the lawless one will be shown. The Lord Jesus will kill him with the breath of his mouth. He will wipe him out by the glory of his coming. 9The lawless one will come with the working of Satan. He will come with every kind of power, sign, and fake wonder. 10He will use every kind of evil trick on those who are perishing. They are perishing because they refused to love the truth that would have saved them. 11That is why God will send them a strong power that leads them astray. Then they will believe the lie. 12So judgment will come on all who did not believe the truth. It will come on all who loved doing evil. 13But we should always thank God for you, brothers and sisters whom the Lord loves. From the beginning, God chose you to be saved. He saves you as the Spirit makes you holy and as you believe the truth. 14He called you to this through the good news we shared. He did it so that you can share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15So, brothers and sisters, stand firm. Hold tight to the teachings we passed on to you. Hold to what we said in person and what we wrote in our letter. 16Our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father loved us. By grace they gave us comfort that lasts forever and a good hope. May they 17encourage your hearts. And may they make you strong in every good thing you say and do.
