1Some time later, David beat the Philistines. He brought them under his rule. He took Metheg-ammah from the Philistines. 2David also beat the Moabites. He made them lie down on the ground in rows. Then he measured them with a cord. He measured two cord lengths of men to be put to death. He measured one cord length of men to be spared. So the Moabites came under David's rule and paid him tribute. 3David also beat Hadadezer son of Rehob. He was the king of Zobah. Hadadezer had gone out to get back his rule along the Euphrates River. 4David captured 1,000 chariots from him. He also captured 7,000 chariot drivers and 20,000 foot soldiers. He crippled all the chariot horses except 100. He kept those for chariots. 5The Arameans of Damascus came to help King Hadadezer of Zobah. But David killed 22,000 of their men. 6Then he put groups of soldiers in Aram of Damascus. The Arameans came under David's rule. They paid him tribute. The LORD helped David win everywhere he went. 7David took the gold shields that belonged to Hadadezer's officers. He brought them to Jerusalem. 8King David also took a large amount of bronze from Betah and Berothai. These were Hadadezer's cities. 9King Toi of Hamath heard that David had beaten Hadadezer's whole army. 10So he sent his son Joram to greet King David. Joram came to bless David for his win. David had fought Hadadezer and beaten him. Hadadezer had been at war with Toi. Joram brought things made of silver, gold, and bronze. 11King David set these apart for the LORD. He also gave the silver and gold he had set apart from all the nations he had brought under his rule. 12These lands were Edom and Moab. They were the Ammonites, the Philistines, and the Amalekites. He also gave what he took from Hadadezer son of Rehob, the king of Zobah. 13David became famous when he came back from killing 18,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. 14He put groups of soldiers all through Edom. All the Edomites came under David's rule. The LORD helped David win everywhere he went. 15So David ruled over all Israel. He did what was fair and right for all his people. 16Joab son of Zeruiah was in charge of the army. Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud kept the records. 17Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelech son of Abiathar were priests. Seraiah was the scribe. 18Benaiah son of Jehoiada was in charge of the Cherethites and Pelethites. And David's sons were priestly leaders.a
