1From the elder. To the chosen lady and her children. I love you in the truth. And I am not the only one. All who know the truth love you too. 2We love you because of the truth that lives in us. It will be with us forever. 3Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us in truth and love. They come from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father's Son. 4I was so happy to find some of your children walking in the truth. That is just what the Father commanded us to do. 5And now, dear lady, I ask you this. It is not a new command I'm writing to you. It is one we have had from the beginning. Let's love one another. 6And this is love: that we live by his commands. This is the same command you have heard from the beginning. You must walk in love. 7For many liars have gone out into the world. They will not say that Jesus Christ has come in a human body. Anyone like that is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8Watch yourselves. Do not lose what we have worked for. Then you will get your full reward. 9Some people run ahead and do not stay in the teaching about Christ. Anyone like that does not have God. Whoever stays in his teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10Someone may come to you who does not bring this teaching. Do not welcome him into your home. Do not even greet him. 11Whoever greets such a person takes part in his evil deeds. 12I have much to write to you. But I'd rather not use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to come and talk with you face to face. Then our joy will be full. 13The children of your chosen sister send you greetings.
