1Jehoshaphat king of Judah came home safely to Jerusalem. 2Then Jehu son of Hanani the seer went out to face him. He said to King Jehoshaphat, "Should you help the wicked? Should you love those who hate the LORD? Because of this, the LORD is angry with you. 3But some good is found in you. You have taken the Asherah poles out of the land. And you have set your heart on seeking God." 4Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem. Then he went out again among the people, from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim. He turned them back to the LORD, the God of their fathers. 5He chose judges in the land. He put them in each of the walled cities of Judah. 6He told the judges, "Think hard about what you do. You are not judging for man, but for the LORD. He is with you when you make a ruling. 7Now let the fear of the LORD be on you. Be careful what you do. With the LORD our God there is nothing unfair. He does not take sides, and he does not take bribes." 8Jehoshaphat also chose some Levites, priests, and heads of Israelite families in Jerusalem. They were to judge for the LORD and settle fights. And they lived in Jerusalem. 9He gave them orders. He said, "You must serve faithfully with your whole heart in the fear of the LORD. 10Your brothers who live in their cities will bring cases to you. A case may be about killing. Or it may be about some other law, command, rule, or decree. In every case, you must warn them. Then they will not become guilty before the LORD. And wrath will not come on you and your brothers. Do this, and you will not be guilty. 11See, Amariah the chief priest will be over you in all matters of the LORD. Zebadiah son of Ishmael, the leader of the tribe of Judah, will be over you in all matters of the king. The Levites will serve as officers for you. Be strong and act. May the LORD be with those who do right!"
