1Asa's son Jehoshaphat became king in his place. He made himself strong against Israel. 2He placed troops in all the strong cities of Judah. He put groups of soldiers in the land of Judah. He also put them in the towns of Ephraim that his father Asa had captured. 3The LORD was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the early ways of his father David. He did not seek the Baals. 4Instead, he sought the God of his father and obeyed his commands. He did not follow the ways of Israel. 5So the LORD made the kingdom firm in Jehoshaphat's hands. All Judah brought him gifts. So he had great riches and honor. 6His heart was glad to follow the ways of the LORD. He also removed the high places and Asherah poles from Judah. 7In the third year of his rule, Jehoshaphat sent out his officials to teach in the towns of Judah. They were Ben-hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah. 8Some Levites went with them. They were Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tob-adonijah. The priests Elishama and Jehoram also went with them. 9They taught all through Judah. They took with them the Book of the Law of the LORD. They went to all the towns of Judah and taught the people. 10The fear of the LORD fell on all the kingdoms of the lands around Judah. So they did not go to war against Jehoshaphat. 11Some Philistines brought Jehoshaphat gifts and silver as tribute. The Arabs brought him 7,700 rams and 7,700 goats from their flocks. 12Jehoshaphat grew stronger and stronger. He built forts and store cities in Judah. 13He kept large supplies in the towns of Judah. He also had brave, mighty warriors in Jerusalem. 14Here is how many there were, listed by their family groups. From Judah, these were the commanders of thousands: Adnah was the commander, with 300,000 brave warriors. 15Next was Jehohanan the commander, with 280,000. 16Next was Amasiah son of Zichri, who offered himself to serve the LORD. He had 200,000 brave warriors. 17From Benjamin there was Eliada, a brave warrior. He had 200,000 men armed with bows and shields. 18Next was Jehozabad, with 180,000 men ready for battle. 19These were the men who served the king. This did not count those he placed in the strong cities all through Judah.
