1Rehoboam's rule became firm and his royal power grew strong. Then he and all Israel with him turned away from the Law of the LORD. 2They had been unfaithful to the LORD. So in the fifth year of Rehoboam's rule, Shishak king of Egypt attacked Jerusalem. 3He came with 1,200 chariots and 60,000 horsemen. Countless troops came with him out of Egypt. There were Libyans, Sukkites, and Cushites. 4He captured the strong cities of Judah and came all the way to Jerusalem. 5Then Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and the leaders of Judah. They had gathered at Jerusalem because of Shishak. Shemaiah said to them, "This is what the LORD says: 'You have left me. So now I have left you and handed you over to Shishak.'" 6So the leaders of Israel and the king humbled themselves. They said, "The LORD is righteous." 7The LORD saw that they had humbled themselves. Then the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah. He said, "They have humbled themselves, so I will not destroy them. I will soon rescue them. I will not pour out my anger on Jerusalem through Shishak. 8But they will become his servants, so that they may learn how serving me is different from serving the kings of other lands." 9So King Shishak of Egypt attacked Jerusalem. He took away the treasures of the LORD's house and of the royal palace. He took everything, even the gold shields Solomon had made. 10So King Rehoboam made bronze shields to take their place. He gave them to the captains of the guard. These guards kept watch at the door of the royal palace. 11Whenever the king went into the LORD's house, the guards went with him carrying the shields. Later they brought them back to the guardroom. 12Rehoboam humbled himself, so the LORD's anger turned away from him. The LORD did not destroy him completely. In fact, things were good in Judah. 13So King Rehoboam made himself strong in Jerusalem and ruled there. He was forty-one years old when he became king. He ruled seventeen years in Jerusalem. That was the city the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel to put his Name there. Rehoboam's mother was Naamah the Ammonite. 14Rehoboam did evil, because he did not set his heart on seeking the LORD. 15The acts of Rehoboam, from first to last, are written down. They are in the records of Shemaiah the Prophet and of Iddo the Seer that deal with family lines. Rehoboam and Jeroboam were at war with each other the whole time. 16Rehoboam died and joined his ancestors. He was buried in the City of David. His son Abijah became king in his place.
