1Brothers and sisters, we don't need to write to you about times and dates. 2You know very well that the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3People will be saying, "All is peaceful and safe." Then all of a sudden, destruction will come on them. It will come like birth pains on a woman who is going to have a baby. And they will not escape. 4But brothers and sisters, you are not in the dark. So that day should not surprise you like a thief. 5You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the dark. 6So let's not be asleep like the others. Let's stay awake and keep a clear mind. 7People who sleep, sleep at night. People who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8But we belong to the day. So let's keep a clear mind. Let's put on faith and love like armor over our chest. Let's put on the hope of being saved like a helmet. 9God did not choose us to suffer his anger. He chose us to be saved through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10Jesus died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11So encourage each other and build each other up. You are already doing this. 12Brothers and sisters, we ask you to respect those who work hard among you. They care for you in the Lord, and they warn you. 13Love them and honor them very highly because of their work. Live in peace with each other. 14We urge you, brothers and sisters, to warn those who are lazy and won't follow the rules. Encourage those who are afraid. Help those who are weak. Be patient with everyone. 15Make sure no one pays back wrong for wrong. Always try to do what is good for each other and for everyone. 16Always be full of joy. 17Never stop praying. 18Give thanks no matter what happens. This is what God wants for you in Christ Jesus. 19Do not put out the Spirit's fire. 20Do not look down on prophecies. 21But test everything. Hold on to what is good. 22Stay away from every kind of evil. 23May the God of peace himself make you completely holy. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept without blame when our Lord Jesus Christ comes. 24The One who calls you is faithful. He will do it. 25Brothers and sisters, pray for us too. 26Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss. 27I command you before the Lord to read this letter to all the brothers and sisters. 28May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
