1So when we could not stand it any longer, we decided to stay behind alone in Athens. 2We sent Timothy to you. He is our brother, and he works with us for God in telling the good news about Christ. We sent him to make you strong and to encourage you in your faith. 3We did not want any of you to be shaken by these troubles. You know that we are meant to go through them. 4When we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be treated badly. And as you know, that is what happened. 5That is why I sent Timothy when I could not stand it any longer. I wanted to find out about your faith. I was afraid the tempter had tempted you somehow. Then all our work would have been for nothing. 6But Timothy has just come back from visiting you. He brought good news about your faith and love. He says you always have happy memories of us. He says you want to see us, just as we want to see you. 7So, brothers and sisters, we have been in great trouble and have been treated badly. But in all of it, your faith has given us comfort about you. 8Now we can really live, as long as you stand firm in the Lord. 9How can we thank God enough for you? We have so much joy before God because of you. 10Night and day we pray very hard to see you face to face. We want to give you what is still missing in your faith. 11May our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus make a way for us to come to you. 12May the Lord make your love grow and overflow. May you love each other and everyone else more and more, just as our love for you overflows. 13Then he will make your hearts strong, holy, and without blame before our God and Father. This will be true when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones. Amen.
