¹Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God. And everyone who loves the Father also loves his children. ²Here is how we know that we love God's children: when we love God and keep his commands. ³For loving God means keeping his commands. And his commands are not too hard to carry, ⁴because everyone born of God wins over the world. And here is what has won the victory over the world: our faith. ⁵So who wins over the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. ⁶Jesus Christ is the one who came by water and blood. He did not come by water only. He came by water and blood. And the Spirit is the one who tells us this is true, because the Spirit is the truth. ⁷For there are three that tell what is true:a ⁸the Spirit, the water, and the blood. And these three agree. ⁹We accept what people tell us is true. But what God tells us is greater. And this is what God has told us about his Son. ¹⁰Whoever believes in the Son of God has this witness in his heart. Whoever does not believe God has made God out to be a liar. That is because he has not believed what God has told us about his Son. ¹¹And here is what God has told us: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. ¹²Whoever has the Son has life. Whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. ¹³I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God. I want you to know that you have eternal life. ¹⁴Here is why we can be bold when we come to him. If we ask for anything that fits his will, he hears us. ¹⁵And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, then we know that we already have what we asked him for. ¹⁶You may see your brother or sister doing a sin that does not lead to death. You should pray to God for that person. God will give him life. This is for those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying you should pray about that one. ¹⁷All wrongdoing is sin. But there is sin that does not lead to death. ¹⁸We know that anyone born of God does not keep on sinning. The One who was born of God keeps him safe. And the evil one cannot touch him. ¹⁹We know that we belong to God. And we know that the whole world is under the power of the evil one. ²⁰And we know that the Son of God has come. He has helped us understand, so that we can know the one who is true. And we are in the one who is true. We are in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. ²¹Little children, keep yourselves away from idols.
