1Brothers and sisters, I want you to know something. Our ancestors were all under the cloud. They all passed through the sea. 2They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3They all ate the same spiritual food. 4They all drank the same spiritual drink. They drank from the spiritual rock that went with them. And that rock was Christ. 5But God was not pleased with most of them. They were struck down in the wilderness. 6These things happened as examples for us. They warn us not to want evil things as they did. 7Do not worship idols, as some of them did. As it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink. Then they got up to party wildly." 8We must not commit sexual sin, as some of them did. In one day 23,000 of them died. 9We must not test Christ, as some of them did. They were killed by snakes. 10And do not complain, as some of them did. They were killed by the destroying angel. 11These things happened to them as examples. They were written down to warn us. We live at the time when the ages are coming to their end. 12So if you think you are standing strong, be careful that you don't fall. 13No temptation has come to you that is not common to everyone. And God is faithful. He will not let you be tempted more than you can handle. When you are tempted, he will also give you a way out. Then you will be able to stand up under it. 14So, my dear friends, run away from worshiping idols. 15I am speaking to people who think clearly. Judge for yourselves what I say. 16We bless the cup of blessing. Isn't that a sharing in the blood of Christ? We break the bread. Isn't that a sharing in the body of Christ? 17There is one loaf. So we who are many are one body. For we all share the one loaf. 18Think about the people of Israel. Don't those who eat the sacrifices share in the altar? 19So am I saying that food sacrificed to an idol is anything? Or that an idol is anything? 20No. But the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God. And I don't want you to be partners with demons. 21You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too. You cannot share in the Lord's table and the table of demons too. 22Are we trying to make the Lord jealous? Are we stronger than he is? 23"I am allowed to do anything." But not everything is good for you. "I am allowed to do anything." But not everything builds others up. 24No one should look out only for his own good. He should look out for the good of others. 25Eat anything sold in the meat market. Don't ask questions about it because of your conscience. 26For "the earth is the Lord's, and everything in it." 27Suppose someone who does not believe invites you to a meal, and you want to go. Eat anything that is served to you. Don't ask questions about it because of your conscience. 28But someone may tell you, "This food was offered to idols." Then don't eat it. Do this for the sake of the one who told you, and for the sake of conscience. 29I mean the other person's conscience, not yours. For why should my freedom be judged by someone else's conscience? 30If I eat the meal with thanks, why am I blamed for food I thank God for? 31So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32Do not make anyone trip and fall. Don't do it to Jews or Greeks or the church of God. 33I also try to please everyone in all I do. I am not looking out for my own good. I am looking out for the good of many people, so that they may be saved.
