1These came from Judah: Perez, Hezron, Carmi, Hur, and Shobal. 2Shobal's son Reaiah was the father of Jahath. Jahath was the father of Ahumai and Lahad. These were the clans of the Zorathites. 3These were Etam's sons: Jezreel, Ishma, and Idbash. Their sister was named Hazzelelponi. 4Penuel was the father of Gedor. Ezer was the father of Hushah. These came from Hur. Hur was the firstborn son of Ephrathah. He was the father of Bethlehem. 5Ashhur was the father of Tekoa. He had two wives, Helah and Naarah. 6Naarah had these sons by him: Ahuzzam, Hepher, Temeni, and Haahashtari. These were Naarah's children. 7Helah's sons were Zereth, Zohar, Ethnan, 8and Koz. Koz was the father of Anub and Zobebah. He was also the father of the clans of Aharhel son of Harum. 9Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother named him Jabez. She said, "Because I gave birth to him in pain."a 10Jabez cried out to the God of Israel. He prayed, "Please bless me and make my land bigger! Let your hand be with me. Keep me from harm, so that I will be free from pain." And God gave Jabez what he asked for. 11Chelub was Shuhah's brother. Chelub was the father of Mehir. Mehir was the father of Eshton. 12Eshton was the father of Beth-rapha, Paseah, and Tehinnah. Tehinnah was the father of Ir-nahash. These were the men of Recah. 13Kenaz's sons were Othniel and Seraiah. Othniel's sons were Hathath and Meonothai. 14Meonothai was the father of Ophrah. Seraiah was the father of Joab. Joab was the father of the people who lived in Ge-harashim. It got that name because its people were craftsmen.b 15Caleb son of Jephunneh had these sons: Iru, Elah, and Naam. Elah's son was Kenaz. 16Jehallelel's sons were Ziph, Ziphah, Tiria, and Asarel. 17Ezrah's sons were Jether, Mered, Epher, and Jalon. Mered's wife Bithiah gave birth to Miriam, Shammai, and Ishbah. Ishbah was the father of Eshtemoa. 18These were the children of Bithiah, the daughter of Pharaoh. Mered also married a woman from Judah. She gave birth to Jered, the father of Gedor. She also had Heber, the father of Soco, and Jekuthiel, the father of Zanoah. 19Hodiah's wife was the sister of Naham. Her sons were the fathers of Keilah the Garmite and of Eshtemoa the Maacathite. 20Shimon's sons were Amnon, Rinnah, Ben-hanan, and Tilon. Ishi's family included Zoheth and Ben-zoheth. 21Shelah was Judah's son. Shelah's sons were Er, the father of Lecah, and Laadah, the father of Mareshah. Shelah's family also included the clans of linen workers at Beth-ashbea, 22Jokim, the men of Cozeba, and Joash and Saraph. Joash and Saraph ruled in Moab and Jashubi-lehem. These names come from very old records. 23They were the potters who lived at Netaim and Gederah. They lived there and worked for the king. 24These came from Simeon: Nemuel, Jamin, Jarib, Zerah, and Shaul. 25Shaul's sons were Shallum, Mibsam, and Mishma. 26Mishma's sons were Hammuel, Zaccur, and Shimei. 27Shimei had sixteen sons and six daughters. But his brothers did not have many children. So their whole clan did not grow as large as the people of Judah. 28They lived in Beersheba, Moladah, Hazar-shual, 29Bilhah, Ezem, Tolad, 30Bethuel, Hormah, Ziklag, 31Beth-marcaboth, Hazar-susim, Beth-biri, and Shaaraim. These were their cities until David became king. 32Their villages were Etam, Ain, Rimmon, Tochen, and Ashan. That makes five towns. 33They also had all the villages around these towns as far as Baal. These were the places where they lived. And they kept a written record of their families. 34Meshobab, Jamlech, Joshah son of Amaziah, 35Joel, Jehu son of Joshibiah (the son of Seraiah, the son of Asiel), 36Elioenai, Jaakobah, Jeshohaiah, Asaiah, Adiel, Jesimiel, Benaiah, 37and Ziza son of Shiphi (the son of Allon, the son of Jedaiah, the son of Shimri, the son of Shemaiah). 38These men listed by name were the leaders of their clans. Their families grew very large. 39So they traveled to the edge of Gedor, to the east side of the valley. They were looking for grassland for their flocks. 40There they found rich, good grassland. The land was wide open, peaceful, and quiet. That was because some people from Ham's family had lived there before. 41These men whose names are listed came there when Hezekiah was king of Judah. They attacked the people of Ham in their homes. They also attacked the Meunites who were there. They destroyed them completely, as things set apart for God, and they are gone to this day. Then the men settled there in their place, because there was grassland for their flocks. 42Five hundred of these men from Simeon went to Mount Seir. They were led by Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi. 43They killed the rest of the Amalekites who had escaped. And they have lived there to this day.
