1Then David said, "The house of the Lord GOD will be here. And the altar of burnt offering for Israel will be here too." 2So David gave orders to gather the foreigners living in the land of Israel. He chose some of them to cut stones. They were to shape the stones for building the house of God. 3David supplied a large amount of iron. It was for making nails for the doors of the gates and for the clamps. He also supplied more bronze than could be weighed. 4He also supplied more cedar logs than anyone could count, because the people of Sidon and Tyre had brought David a large amount of cedar logs. 5David said, "My son Solomon is young and has little experience. But the house to be built for the LORD must be very grand. It must be famous and glorious in all lands. So I must get things ready for it." So David got a huge amount ready before he died. 6Then David called for his son Solomon. He told him to build a house for the LORD, the God of Israel. 7David said to Solomon, "My son, I wanted in my heart to build a house for the Name of the LORD my God. 8But the LORD spoke this word to me: 'You have shed much blood. You have fought great wars. You are not to build a house for my Name, because you have shed so much blood on the ground in front of me. 9But you will have a son who will be a man of rest. I will give him rest from all his enemies all around him. For his name will be Solomon. I will give Israel peace and quiet while he is king.a 10He is the one who will build a house for my Name. He will be my son, and I will be his Father. And I will make the throne of his kingdom over Israel last forever.' 11"Now, my son, may the LORD be with you. May you succeed in building the house of the LORD your God, just as he said you would. 12Most of all, may the LORD give you wisdom and understanding when he puts you in charge of Israel. Then you can keep the Law of the LORD your God. 13You will succeed if you carefully obey the laws and rules the LORD gave Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or lose heart. 14Look, I have worked hard to supply the house of the LORD. I have 100,000 talents of gold and 1,000,000 talents of silver. I have so much bronze and iron that it can't be weighed. I have also supplied wood and stone. And you may add to them.b 15You also have many workers. You have stonecutters, stone builders, and carpenters. You have men skilled in every kind of work, 16in gold and silver, bronze and iron. There are more craftsmen than anyone can count. Now start the work, and may the LORD be with you." 17Then David ordered all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon. 18He said, "The LORD your God is with you, isn't he? He has given you rest on every side, hasn't he? For he has handed the people of the land over to me. The land is now under the control of the LORD and his people. 19Now give your heart and soul to seeking the LORD your God. Start building the holy place of the Lord GOD. Then you can bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD and the holy objects of God into the temple. It will be built for the Name of the LORD."
